Minnesota battled a federal Goals 2000 education system, called the Profile of Learning, from 1998 until 2003. It was ultimately repealed. A statewide coalition of parents, teachers, and other citizens came together under the umbrella of the Maple River Education Coalition.
This VHS is an excellent overview of the three-part federal education system that has transformed education in the United States. The presentation was part of a Maple River Education Coalition Conference made on September 29, 2001. The information is completely relevant and accurate today, and it is true for every state in the nation.
Part II of the tape is an Action Plan that ultimately resulted in the legislative repeal of Minnesota’s Profile of Learning. The Action Plan may serve as a model for successful grassroots activism in any state. The 2002 campaign for Governor in Minnesota was a watershed event in which grassroots opposition to the Profile of Learning played a prominent part. This conference equipped the public to take an active political role in that election. After the 2002 November election, the Profile was repealed.
